Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping fabric that can be used in a multitude of different applications. Some believe its origins date back to the Muromachi period (1136 to 1573), when nobles and feudal lords used this cloth to wrap their clothes when they went to the public baths, to avoid soiling them.

This cloth took the name furoshiki at this point. Its literal meaning is “bathing cloth”. However, furoshiki originated in Japan around 710 B.C. and was originally called tsutsumi, meaning “package” or “gift”. Today, one of main uses of furoshiki is to wrap gifts in a simple, waste-free way.

In Japan, tradition suggests that furoshiki should be returned to the giver. It's up to each individual to decide whether or not to keep this wrapping fabric.

If you're giving a gift wrapped in a furoshiki that you'd like back, it's customary to leave a message suggesting recipient adopt Japanese tradition of returning wrapping to the person who gave it, with thanks.

On the other hand, if furoshiki wrapping is part of gift given to recipient, he or she may choose to use furoshiki to wrap a gift of his or her own in the future, thus continuing furoshiki's life as a gift deliverer.

Furoshiki can be used in many ways: pocket square, gift wrap, handbag, shopping bag, wine bottle cover, scarf, belt, shawl, tablecloth... Same (shark) komon refers to a small pattern made by superimposing fan-shaped motifs drawn with fine grains on the diagonal and dyeing them to resemble shark skin.

The meaning of “Samekomon” would be “to ward off bad luck and evil spirits” because shark skin is hard like armor.

Asano-ha is the hemp leaf. Hemp leaf motif is a geometric pattern of overlapping hexagons inspired by hemp leaves. Hemp leaf symbolizes a powerful life force because it grows quickly; in the past, it was drawn on children's maternity clothes to pray that they would grow up strong and healthy. Like hexagram, hexagon is believed to have power to ward off evil.
